A few friends and I were walking around Old Town Alexandria when I spotted a man in a wheelchair struggling to cross the street as he got off the bus. I asked him if he needed any assistance. He kindly asked me to help him cross the street so that he could get to his doctor’s appointment. As I was walking him across the street, we got to chat for a moment. I asked him if he had someone to come help him get home from his appointment. Unfortunately, he informed me that he was currently homeless and living off of welfare. I immediately took the $20 out of my wallet and insisted that he take it. $20 might not mean a lot to some people, but it sure meant a lot to him.
