At ARG, lunch is brought in by our vendors all the time to show their appreciation. It happens so often, that I think we sometimes forget the true meaning behind why they do it.
Last Sunday, I picked up donuts for the staff and patients of Birmingham Green’s dementia unit. I go there to visit my dad, but I never took the time to let the folks there know how much I appreciate them. It’s because of their staff of caregivers that families of dementia patients can sleep at night knowing their loved ones are cared for.
The staff there is always moving….running around to feed, dress, or walk with someone who forgot how to do so. They definitely don’t have much time for a coffee and donut break…so I decided to provide one for the staff and the residents. This way they could sit and take a little time to relate to their patients on a different level.
When I was ready to leave, my dad kissed me on my forehead and told me to call him when I got home. I was shocked because my dad had not remembered to do that only these past few years since having dementia. There I was with tears streaming down my face as I left down the hall….but I was so incredibly happy!
